Serving children a work of art

Throughout the Pulawy region of Poland this past holiday season, scores of people received greeting cards made with love by mentally disabled children. It’s all part of an ongoing service project and fundraiser conducted by the Kiwanis Club of Pulawy.

During its work among the mentally disabled children, the club identifies those who are “manually talented” and who show a flair for art, club members say. These children are then encouraged to create their own works of art, which are later transformed into holiday cards. The club then sells the cards, and the money raised is used to underwrite the club’s other projects.

“At one time,” notes Kiwanian Irena Malecka-Olszak, “the children feel they are needed and important. It also works for their acceptance into the community.”

The art project and the club’s focus on mentally disabled children complements its work among children from low-income families. The club works to make sure all children receive daily meals and gives them presents during each holiday season.
