Fitness is a family affair
As in many households across North America, Bowling Green, Ohio, families
are bombarded by statistics and news reports about obesity. Even if they
wanted to do something about their weight, they may not have the means
to join a gym. Even if they have the means, they may not have a safe place
to leave their children while the adults exercise. And the children may
have weight problems too.
Fortunately, Bowling Green families have the Kiwanis Kids Clubhouse.
This past January, the Kiwanis International Foundation awarded the Bowling
Green Kiwanis club a US$10,000 grant to help equip and operate
the clubhouse.
The Kiwanis Kids Clubhouse is housed in a 79,900-square-foot community
center, which also features an indoor track, gymnasium, fitness room,
classrooms, and a multipurpose room. While parents use these facilities,
children ages six months to nine years old are welcomed to play and learn
healthful life habits beneath a “K” logo.
“The purpose of the Kiwanis Kids Clubhouse is to increase family activity,
help parents support the social and physical health of their children,
and prepare children for lifelong success in avoiding overweight/obesity
and achieve good cardiac health,” says the clubs KIF grant application.
