Walk celebrates season, raises money

Spring is a great time for getting outdoors and, perhaps, taking a walk. It’s appropriate, then, that it also is the time to change Key Club International’s season of service to the March of Dimes (MOD).

In addition to WalkAmerica, simple fundraisers also can benefit Key Club Internationals spring season of service, the March of Dimes. The Key Club of Bayside High School in New York, for example, raised more than US$150 by selling paper shoes and pumpkins in the school lobby. MOD promotes healthy babies and works to prevent premature births and birth defects, and in recent years, Key Clubs have used the Time for Change fundraising campaign to support MOD’s Prematurity Campaign.

The Key Club of Abington High School in Pennsylvania participated in the MOD WalkAmerica and raised more than US$2,000 through donations, a teacher dress-down day, and selling baby foot-shaped lollipops.

The club also has a personal connection to the cause, according to club member Meghan Cianfarini.

“One of our teachers had a son who was born prematurely and passed away,” Meghan says. “We were so happy the teacher walked with us. She thanked us for honoring her son’s memory.”

WalkAmerica is an event that anyone in the Kiwanis family could easily participate. Kiwanis clubs can support their sponsored Key Club financially by donating to the fundraiser—or by joining in!

For more information about MOD, visit the Key Club International Web site or click here.
