Theismann: Broken leg ‘a blessing’

Most people experience a defining moment in their lives. Former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann’s came during a football game in 1985, when New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor knocked him to the turf and broke his leg in two places, ending his career.

“One football fan said that was a tragedy for me,” Theismann told a gathering sponsored by the Alexandria, Virginia, Kiwanis club. “No, it wasn’t; it was a blessing.”

After extensive soul searching, Theismann said he launched another career: traveling the country to make motivational talks benefiting the Salvation Army and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Along the way, he learned the ropes as a television announcer.

Nowadays, Theismann is much sought after, commanding upwards of $20,000 an appearance. He chose to donate his services at the Kiwanis luncheon, though, because of his long-standing friendship with club president Steven Blood.

“Steve (an osteopathic physician) has been looking after my injuries for more than 25 years,” he noted.

Before he left, Theismann gave his audience some sage advice: “Set your own goals. Write them down—then go for them.”
