Playground no spring chicken
The Kiwanis Park Tons of Fun Tot Lot wasn’t so much fun anymore. In fact, it was downright shabby. Moreover, it wasn’t safe. Assisted by a recent grant from the Kiwanis International Foundation, however, the Kiwanis Club of Williamston, Michigan, is taking on the tot lot.

“The tiny-tot fenced-in play area for children ages zero to five, was originally constructed by the Williamston Kiwanis club in the 1940s,” states the club’s grant request. “The club refurbished the area in the 1970s. The problem is that the playground equipment—much of it nearly 40 years old—is now obsolete and some is broken beyond repair. None of the equipment currently meets today’s safety standards.”
The club is using the foundation grant and other funds it has amassed to replace the tot lot equipment with modern, safe gear that will meet the needs of very young children—including those who have disabilities—and to provide benches for parents to watch their kids at play. The club plans to complete the project in May and will place a prominent plaque in the overhauled park—once again proudly claiming the tot lot as a Kiwanis achievement. |
