‘BUG’ invasion hits schools

Cheap cuts an invaluable fundraiser

College students usually don’t have a ton of money to spend on themselves, so it isn’t a huge surprise that $5 haircuts recently were very popular on one campus.

Circle K’ers at the College of William & Mary in Virginia staged Cuts for Love and raised more than US$350 for the American Cancer Society.

“The event was surprisingly successful and was relatively easy to host,” says president Mitra Irdmusa. “The barbers came with all their supplies (and an instructor in tow), so all we had to provide was a place for them to do their work.”

More than 70 students—and some professors—took advantage of the cheap cuts given by the Virginia School of Hair Design. And two female students were brave enough to chop off more than 10 inches of hair to donate to Locks of Love.

But the students and faculty weren’t the only ones to benefit from the event.

“It was mutually beneficial because the stylists need 50 practice hours of hair-cutting experience before becoming certified,” Mitra says.
