Two heroes receiving medals at convention

Five heroes received the Robert P. Connelly Medal for Heroism this past February, and two of them are being recognized at the 2005 Kiwanis International Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii, July 2-6.

Michael Bennett was shot in the leg attempting to save his students.Principal John Sawchuk and teacher Michael Bennett of Columbia High School in East Greenbush, New York, put their lives on the line to stop a student from taking the lives of fellow classmates. The student entered the school, shotgun in hand.

Sawchuk and Bennett’s quick thinking resulted in only one injury. Bennett was shot in the leg while attempting to diffuse the volatile situation.
