Drives drive students’ goodwill

There are paper drives, food drives, and clothing drives. But, the driven University of Nebraska, Omaha, Circle K club drove the concept to the next level with its drive: a drive drive.

UNO CKI'ers greet clothing donors. Halfway through the drive week, they had to empty the collection box to make room for more items.“We wanted to think big when it came to celebrating Circle K Week 2005, and we came up with ‘Drive Week at UNO,’” says club president Ann Philbrick. “The week consisted of five different drives, and each day of the week was dedicated to a different drive.”

Drives included: clothing for a shelter for the homeless, food for a food bank, eyeglasses for LensCrafter’s ‘Give the Gift of Sight’ program, cell phones for the Latina Resources Center, and magazines for area clinics. The club set up a booth and donation boxes in the student center. For simplicity, the Circle K’ers accepted donations for any of the drive beneficiaries on any day.

“We collected 92 pounds of food, 189 pounds of clothes, 45 pairs of eyeglasses, 6 cell phones, and 122 magazines,” Ann says.
