Fundraiser struts catwalk

Burbank for Fun, California, Aktion Club members walked the catwalk to raise money for the construction of the Roy and Patricia Disney Cancer Center. The members modeled clothing from the Discovery Shop, a resale operation of the American Cancer Society, for an audience of Kiwanians and members of other service organizations.

A visit to the Ronald McDonald House and meeting hospitalized children sparked the group’s interest in helping cancer patients.

“When I told them about the cancer center, they associated it with their experience at the Ronald McDonald House and really wanted to do this fashion show project,” says advisor Dona Wade.

According to Dona, the Aktion Club members loved showing off their outfits.

“One member, who’s a big racing fan, found a NASCAR T-shirt,” she recalls. “So we made him a checkered flag to wave while he was walking. He had more fun than anyone.”

The fundraiser was a huge success, raising more than US$10,000.

“They just want to give, no matter their circumstances,” Dona says. “They know there are those who are worse off, and they want to help them.”
