Q Our board of directors has decided to support a local organization by having club members sell tickets to a special event being staged by this organization. Each member has been given $25 worth of tickets and told to either sell them all or expect to be billed for the number unsold. Can the board really make us do this?

Requiring each member of your club to sell a certain number of tickets or to pay for them out of his or her pocket amounts to placing an assessment upon the club membership. The only way an assessment can be placed upon each member is under the provisions found in Article XVIII, Section 2, of the Standard Form for Club Bylaws. These provisions require that revenue raised from sources other than those defined in this article (induction fee, annual dues) must be approved by a two-thirds vote of the active, senior, and privileged members present at any regular meeting, provided written notice has been given the members at least two weeks prior to the meeting.

As it stands now, the action of your board can amount only to a recommendation. (Note: You can download a copy of the Standard Form for Club Bylaws—and any of a number of other club resources—at www.kiwanis.org/resources/club/.)

Q For a club member to be considered for Legion of Honor recognition, must his or her years of membership be continuous and in one club?

No, eligibility is based upon a Kiwanian having at least 25 years of membership, not necessarily consecutive, in one or more clubs. (Note: You can download additional information on the Legion of Honor—including how to order lapel pins or recognition certificates—at www.kiwanis.org/lit/adm1leghon.pdf.)
