Meet ‘another’ Siemens

In Iowa, people know the Siemens name belongs to Steve—a Des Moines Kiwanian—and his wife, Barb—an Altoona Kiwanian.

At the Kiwanis International Office in Indianapolis, Indiana, and in many parts of the Kiwanis world, the name Siemens is associated with the same Steve and Barb—the organization’s designated 2005-06 President and First Lady.

But in British Columbia, when you mention the name Siemens, you’re talking about Ken, a six-year member of the Trail Kiwanis club.

As far as they know, Ken and Steve are not related, and they have never met.

How similar are these Siemens men? How different? Take a look:

Steve

  • Joined the Kiwanis Club of Des Moines, Iowa, in 1986.
  • Steve enjoys singing. His family has performed publicly.
  • Life of faith: Steve was president of the Iowa Christian College before becoming a full-time professional speaker.
  • Family: In Steve’s family, Ken Siemens is his father, a former Rotarian.
  • Hobbies: Steve built a “secret garden” for his wife.
  • Sports: Steve enjoys playing golf and watching bull riding.
  • Home, Sweet Home: As a professional speaker, Steve says he could live anywhere. “I choose to live in Des Moines,” he says, praising the Iowa capital city for its family-friendly environment.

  • Kiwanis service: Steve’s Kiwanis activities include reading to immigrant children, a “Kids Fest,” and a basketball jamboree for high school teams.

Ken

  • Joined the Kiwanis Club of Trail, British Columbia, in 1999.
  • Ken admits his singing skills are “virtually nonexistent.”
  • Life of faith: As a full-time minister at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Trail, British Columbia, Ken does “quite a bit of public speaking.”
  • Family: In Ken’s family, Steve is his nephew, but Ken’s Steve is related on his wife’s side and is not a Siemens.
  • Hobbies: Ken enjoys yard work and house maintenance.
  • Sports: Ken doesn’t play golf, but he enjoys watching bull riding.
  • Home, Sweet Home: Rossland is the community of choice for Ken. “It is great place to raise a family,” he says, “with all the advantages of a small community. The mountains are right outside our back door, and a ski resort is five minutes from my house.”
  • Kiwanis service: Ken devotes his Kiwanis time to the Beaver Creek Kiwanis Park, which features campgrounds, a playground, picnic facilities, a walking trail along the Columbia River, and beach volleyball.
