THRIVE campaign fights flu
Kiwanis clubs are urged to take aim against influenza (the flu) this
season by participating in THRIVE. THRIVE—Tackling the Health Risk of
Influenza with Vaccination and Education—is a three-pronged Young Children:
Priority One campaign designed to promote the facts and importance of
flu vaccination. THRIVE’s three components are education, outreach, and
vaccination.
| Influenza is much
more than “just the flu.” It’s expensive, and it can be deadly.
Each year, flu outbreaks cause billions of dollars in medical costs,
more than 200,000 hospitalizations, and an average 36,000 influenza-related
deaths.
Check out what the (US) Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention has to say about
the flu—and how a simple vaccine can minimize its effects.

Each United States Kiwanis club received a THRIVE Influenza Vaccination
and Education Outreach kit. Clubs are encouraged to use the kits to facilitate
the THRIVE components in the following timeline:
Education (September and October): Inform club members
and their families about the dangers of influenza, particularly to patients
at high risk for complications—as well as the benefits of vaccination
with the flu shot.
Outreach (October): Communicate THRIVE program messages
to people and businesses in your community at large.
Vaccination (November): Organize and host vaccination
events at your club and/or in the community. Chiron Vaccines offers to
send a visiting nurse to vaccination locations and administer the vaccines.
