Cornfest pays off

Arts and crafts, candles, games, car washes, festivals, and food—all manner of food from packaged peanuts to pancakes—are common ways Kiwanis clubs fund their service projects.

Crowds of people mix and mingle at an annual corn festivalThe Kiwanis Club of Mohave Mesa Area, Arizona, uses a combination of the latter two, in addition to plenty of entertainment and fun, to ensure funding for more than 50 of the nonprofit organizations it holds near and dear.

“The Corn Festival coincides with the traditional harvesting of the yearly corn crop, providing an occasion when folks from throughout the region get together with friends and family to visit,” says club secretary Nola Charles. “The event has grown to become the number-one community event in the county in terms of participation, but each year is new and different.”
