Tornados, California fires renew call for disaster-relief funds

Recent wildfires in southern California and tornados that caused devastation in many areas have prompted the Kiwanis International Foundation to issue a special request for contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund.

Contribute to the relief efforts or send your support to the Kiwanis International Foundation Disaster Relief Fund, 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA 46268.

Connected gets Updated

Welcome to the updated Kiwanis Connected. In fact, it’s so updated, it’s now called Kiwanis International Update.

The revised Update format allows the once English-only newsletter to serve Kiwanians worldwide in seven languages: English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Chinese, and Spanish.

As with Kiwanis Connected, Kiwanis International Update is intended for all Kiwanis members; so, encourage fellow members subscribe. There is no cost to receive the publication, which is distributed via e-mail.

Super leadership advice

Fresh from his National Football League Super Bowl championship victory, Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy sat down with Kiwanis International CEO Rob Parker to talk about leadership. Here’s a sample of coach—and best-selling author—Dungy’s comments:

“I think of the person in charge as being someone who, number one, (is) very confident and knows what to do, and, number two, can instill that confidence in the people around (him/her). You develop the system so that it can function when you’re not there. To me, that’s the best kind of leader.”

Prepare for Read Around the World

Begin planning now for your club’s participation in Read Around the World. From February 1 through March 3, each club is encouraged to stage at least one project that promotes literacy and encourages children to love reading. Materials are available online, free of charge. Watch for the February 2008 KIWANIS magazine to learn how Kiwanians took the lead in developing programs that make lifelong impact on children’s reading habits.

Why volunteer?

Do you help others to help yourself? Do you volunteer because it’s a good way to make friends? Or are you doing your civic duty?

Share your opinion in “Today’s Poll,” which currently asks for the “main reason I volunteer.” Then wait just a second for the updated results to see how many fellow Kiwanians agree with you.

How great is your club?

Kiwanis magazine is looking for clubs that excel in all of the following areas:

  • Consistent growth over the past 5 years.
  • Generous giving.
  • Effective service
  • Fellowship.

If you know a club that qualifies, e-mail your nomination, describing how the club excels in each of the four categories.

Deadline for nominations is December 31, 2007.

‘1-2-3, You Hold the Key’ rewards new-member recruiters

The “1-2-3, You Hold the Key!” program again is rewarding Kiwanians who recruit new members. Those who recruit one new member receive a bronze key lapel pin. Those who recruit two receive a silver pin. And those who recruit three receive a gold pin. In addition, those who recruit new members will be entered into a random drawing for prizes, to be awarded during the 2008 Kiwanis International Convention in Orlando, Florida. The program runs until June 1, 2008.

Proposed amendments, resolutions due early

As a reminder: All proposed Bylaws amendments and resolutions must be received at the International Office by February 15. Request more information about proposing Bylaws amendments or resolutions.

One big family

November is Kiwanis Family Month. Celebrate by organizing a service or social event with members of your Kiwanis, Aktion Club, Circle K, Key Club, Builders Club, and K-Kids clubs.
