PLAYGROUND – 60 seconds
Kid A: Hey, Tommy, let’s go down to the playground.
Kid B: I dunno. My mom won’t let me go on the merry-go-round since Tanya
got her foot crushed under it.
Kid A: But we might see something neat like that. Didja here about Larry’s
little sister? She got her coat caught in one of those gaps on the slide
hand-rail, and she ended up hanging off the side. Started turning blue
before they got her down.
Kid B: Oh, and I heard my mom say that some kid busted his arm falling
off the monkey bars where all the pea gravel’s gone.
Kid A: Besides, the playground’s the only place my mom says it’s safe
to play.
Kid B: Yeah, my mom says the same thing. Let’s go.
Annc: Kiwanis International knows that children learn and develop physical
skills through playing. They need opportunities to play in safe
environments. That’s why older playgrounds need safety checks and repairs.
And many communities need new playgrounds with state-of-the-art equipment.
The problem is . . . there are not enough people who are willing to take
on the task of making our playgrounds safe for our children.
For more information on how you can become a volunteer and help build
a safe place for our children to play, visit our Web site at www.kiwanis.org.

CRYING BABY – 60 seconds
SFX: Wailing baby
SFX: Phone rings
Female: I know . . . Nick’s been giving me a fit since
birth. I hardly have time to sit down for a cigarette anymore.
Ya know, he was born real small and he’s never
gained weight the way he was s’posed to. He cries all the time
and coughs and wheezes—like one continuous cold.
Annc: Kiwanis clubs support many maternal and child
health programs, including pre-natal health check-ups, taking folic acid,
immunizations, preventing lead poisoning, and educating future mothers
about the dangers of smoking or drinking while pregnant.
Female: There. He’s stopped crying. Let me just light
up . . .
SFX: Baby coughs, starts to cry
Female: Oh jeez. I just can’t win with you, kid.
Annc: For more information on the dangers of smoking
or drinking while pregnant, please visit our website at www.kiwanis.org.

STEAM – 30 seconds
SFX: Steam/boiling water
Annc: Water heaters set at too high a temperature!
Bath water not checked for the temperature
before entry!
Boiling water in pots with handles left unattended
on the stove!
These are all scald burn dangers to children!
Kiwanis clubs work with safety programs,
children’s hospitals, and pediatric trauma programs to prevent children’s
injuries and make sure kids get the best possible treatment when they
do get hurt.

HOME SAFETY – 30 seconds
Dad: Okay, let’s see if we covered all the dangers
your little brother might find. Gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.
Kid: Check.
Dad: All electrical outlets secured from little wandering
fingers?
Kid: Check.
Dad: All household chemicals and bug sprays stored
in high, latched cupboards?
Kid: Check.
Annc: Kiwanis International has a long history of caring
for kids.Working with leading safety organizations, Kiwanis has developed
a home safety checklist and other brochures to help prevent injuries to
children.

IMMUNIZATION – 30 seconds
SFX: Baby cooing and gurgling.
Nurse: Okay, little man, here’s your vaccination.
SFX: Baby cries out, cries/whimpers, and starts to
calm down.
Mother: It’s okay. It’s all over. Now we can go.
Annc. That crying may discourage you from taking your
baby for immunization. But that’s a lot better than the long hours of
crying when your baby has the mumps . . .
SFX: Baby crying loud & hard
Annc: . . . or the sound of his constant coughing
with whooping cough . . .
SFX: Baby coughing repeatedly, with a raw throat
Annc: . . . or wheezing and gasping for breath
because of measles . . .
SFX: Baby wheezing and fighting for breath
Annc: . . . or the sound of the siren as the ambulance
rushes your baby to the hospital . . .
SFX: Siren
Annc: That’s why Kiwanis International invites you
to learn more about immunizations and the diseases they protect your child
from. With a few simple shots. Visit our website at www.kiwanis.org.

SHAKEN BABY – 30 seconds
SFX: Baby crying
Dad: Come on, come on, you’ve been doing this for two-and-a-half
hours !
SFX: Baby crying
Dad: I can’t take much more of this!
SFX: Baby crying
Dad: I won’t hit you.
SFX: Baby crying
Dad: I just . . . want you . . . to stop .
SFX: Silence
Dad: Timmy, are you okay?
SFX: Silence
Dad: I just shook you a little. I didn’t hit
you. Come on Timmy, wake up.
Annc: Each year, hundreds of children suffer brain
injuries or death from shaking. Many parents and care-givers don’t know
the dangers of shaken baby syndrome. A baby’s brain is less protected,
it has more space to move, and the baby’s neck muscles are weak. As
a result, shaking that wouldn’t bother an adult can seriously hurt a baby.
SFX: Dial tone and the tones for 911.
Dad: Send an ambulance quick. I think I’ve hurt
my baby!
Annc: For more information about shaken baby syndrome,
visit our website at www.kiwanis.org.
SFX: Crash and breaking glass.
PARENTING ADVICE – 30 seconds
Man: When children try your soul, as they will,
When they cause you grief, as they do,
When they rouse your anger and provoke you to wrath, as is their way,
When they reduce you to tears and prayers, as often happens,
Love them.
Don’t bother about anything at all until you have first made clear to
yourself that your love for the child in question is holding firmly, swelling
warmly in your heart.
Then, whatever you do will be as nearly right as it is possible for human
judgement to be.
Annc: Those are the words of Angelo Patti, a 19 th
century educator. Good advice for any 21 st century parent. If you
would like a copy of his advice, go to the Kiwanis International website
at www.kiwanis.org. Kiwanis clubs have been reaching out to help children
and their parents since 1915.

(VHS, ¾-inch, Betacam tape formats)
1. IDD/ROGER MOORE : "When we see suffering
and despair in the world around us, we instinctively want to help. That's
why Kiwanis International is working with UNICEF to help eliminate Iodine
Deficiency Disorders - the most prevalent, preventable cause of mental
and physical retardation in the world today - to help by iodizing salt.
And your help is needed, too."
2. "You know Kiwanis International for it's work to help young
children in your community achieve their fullest potential. Now, Kiwanis,
together with UNICEF, is helping children around the world in our global
community escape the threat of mental and physical retardation by working
to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders. You can help, too."
3. INFANT IMMUNIZATION : "From the moment they
were born, you've been doing everything you possibly can to protect them,
but unless you vaccinate them, starting at birth, this is all the protection
they'll have. Before it's too late, vaccinate."
4. SPANISH INFANT IMMUNIZATION :
5. EXPECTANT MOTHERS DON'T SMOKE : "Everyone
does it... I'm under a lot of pressure right now... I've gained weight...
I'll quit someday. You've run out of excuses. If you're pregnant,
quit smoking today!"
6. SCALD AND BURN : "These are some of America's
most dangerous waters... Every year there are more than 5,000 accidents
here. All the victims had one thing in common - they are children, children
severely burned or even killed by hot tap water. Please, test the water
first and never leave children alone in the tub. Let's keep our children
safe."
7. BIKE HELMETS: "Nobody knows a neighborhood
like a kid on a bike. Kids on their bikes explore every street, every
shortcut, curb and pothole--but explorers often encounter the unknown
and the unexpected and they need to be prepared--each year four times
as many children are killed on bikes as kidnapped by strangers. Head
injuries from a bike fall could disable your child for life. The Surgeon
General says helmets could prevent most serious head injuries, so give
your kids bike helmets and make sure they wear them. Bike helmets are
smart."
8. RESIDENTIAL FIRES : "This is how most young
children become victims of fire. They never hear it, they never smell
it, they never wake up. Every year it happens to over 1200 children;
90% live in homes without working smoke detectors. Please install smoke
detectors--test them regularly and have a plan of escape. It may be
the only chance she has."
9. SWIMMING SAFETY/MERLIN OLSEN : "Hi, I'm Merlin
Olsen. Each year in North America, more than 7,000 people are victims
of drowning. The best age to learn swimming skills is 8 to 10 years
old and yet, 2 out of 3 children in this age group don't know how to swim.
That's why Kiwanis created the program called 'Every Child a Swimmer.'
Please work with your local Kiwanians to help make every child a swimmer."
10. KEY CLUB : "There is a key that opens the door
to life-shaping opportunities: Key Club, the high school service club
sponsored by Kiwanis International, giving this generation of teenagers
a feeling for what it's like to serve others, to honor the senior class,
to fill empty spaces in a child's life, to volunteer for worthy causes,
to be an encourager, a friend, a servant, a leader. Key Club. If you
don't have one at your high school, contact your nearest Kiwanis club.
